I think it's incredibly important to know your editor, so I'd love to introduce myself!
I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't completely enamored with reading and learning. Bedtime stories grew into frequent library trips grew into surpassing my reading level grew into sneaking flashlights and books under the covers . . . and it just kept going. I surrounded myself with books and people who read books, and couldn't find a better way to live.
Throughout my education I developed interests in subjects beyond English and language arts. I enjoyed classes like advanced chemistry, physics, German, calculus, guitar, and floral design (I loved them all, but never really got the hang of the last one).
I eventually decided to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in English linguistics at Brigham Young University, where I also minored in editing and business management. I did a lot of reading, writing, and editing—all about the subjects I loved.
While at BYU for my undergraduate degree, I had some great experiences with editing. On the fiction side, I volunteered for three years with the science fiction and fantasy magazine Leading Edge, eventually becoming Editor in Chief. I loved the opportunity and being part of that community. I had a job at the Humanities Publication Center and Faculty Editing Service for two years, where I edited research articles for BYU professors in all disciplines; it kept me on my feet as each project seemed to bring a new subject and new style. I also worked for University Communications, where I learned how to work quickly in order to get emails, news articles, and press releases out on time.
I'm thrilled to be a current law student at Brigham Young University. I have yet to pick which field of law I'll specialize in, but I'm loving the chance to intensively study the United States justice system. I feel like I'm surrounded by more books than ever, which I didn't think was possible. I am continuing to edit while studying law; I don't see myself ever giving it up.
You may be wondering, "Is Hayley one of those people who lives in a studio apartment by herself surrounded by books and she just edits and studies 24/7?" Thank goodness no! I love baking and cooking, finding new places to go on adventures, camping, keeping up with college sports (especially basketball and all things BYU), attempting to run, scrolling through Twitter, reading law reviews, beating everyone at Harry Potter and Doctor Who trivia, finding new songs to play on the guitar, rewatching NUMB3RS and Psych, and reminding myself that anything can (and probably will) happen, so just enjoy the ride!
